RER (Respiratory Exchange Ratio)
RER is a quotient of exhaled carbon dioxide to inhaled oxygen. Its values can be converted to a caloric requirement equivalent and then summarized as optimal heart rate target zones. The RER is the base calculation for the resting metabolic rate (RMR) which is the 24 hour resting caloric needs for an individual; and can only be accurately calculated by the use of a metabolic cart.
